TORY BURCH DEBUTS HER NEW BOUTIQUE

BY LAURIE BROOKINS

The designer talks about the chic new framing for her collections at South Coast Plaza, as well as the key pieces clients are sure to love.

Tory Burch is enjoying quite the high-wattage moment among clients, editors and celebrities alike these days, from the rave editorial reviews of her Spring 2026 collection to multiple red-carpet appearances among A-list actresses. In October alone, Reese Witherspoon, Tessa Thompson, Naomi Watts and Sarah Paulson were just a few of the stars spotted wearing Tory Burch designs to major events in New York and Los Angeles.

Even amid such attention, Burch isn’t content to rest on her laurels. When she’s not focused on a new collection, she’s working on ensuring her eponymous boutiques reflect the design codes of her label while also creating refined retail experiences for her clients. That idea starts with a new design concept for every Tory Burch location — and as of October 31, that includes her chic boutique at South Coast Plaza, which carries a comprehensive selection of the designer’s ready to wear, handbags, shoes and accessories.

Now relocated to a high-profile location within the Costa Mesa retail destination, the new Tory Burch boutique embraces a residential feel via a range of antique and vintage furniture and decor, as well as custom rugs, a bespoke daybed and a selection of ceramic pieces that Burch curated herself. A marble tile floor was inspired by the work of legendary Italian architect Carlos Scarpa, while an oxblood etagere provides perfect framing for Burch’s immensely popular handbag collections, including the Romy and Lee Radziwill styles.

As the doors open on this new retail statement, Burch spoke with South Coast Plaza to discuss the how and why behind the new boutique design, as well as the pieces that should quickly vault to the top of everyone’s must-have lists this season.

SOUTH COAST PLAZA

INTERVIEW: TORY BURCH

South Coast Plaza: The redesign of the Tory Burch boutiques has been a key initiative for the brand; how does this new design work as an elevated framework for your designs?

Tory Burch: It has been an exciting challenge to develop a new concept that reflects where we are today. The clash of heritage and modernity, eclectic colors and textures against the quiet backdrop of curved plaster — it’s the essence of our brand expressed in a new way. Since [founding the brand in] 2004, I’ve learned so much about retail, store design and how to highlight our products in a physical space, and this store represents that evolution.

SCP: The new boutique has opened with the Holiday 2025 collection, with Resort 2026 following soon after. What should clients know about your inspirations for these collections?

TB: For Resort 2026, we reinterpreted icons of American sportswear: the polo, the cardigan, the trench. Plaid “flannels” are actually fluid viscose, T-shirt dresses are wrapped and knotted around the body, and we’re introducing utility jackets and cargos inspired by vintage Japanese workwear.

Our Holiday collection captures the joy and exuberance of the season, and we took a maximalist approach to texture and shine. Draped goddess dresses, shimmering knits, and sequined polos are styled with cozy knits and my favorite evening bag, a soft beaded pouch with fringe trim.

SCP: Which pieces rank among your favorites in these collections, especially those you feel will be a particularly good fit with the South Coast Plaza audience?

TB: A new heeled sandal with extra-large silk flowers, our garnet crushed velvet Mellow slides, and pavé jewelry — everything from delicate hoops to irreverent charm bracelets strung with pavé apples, carrots, and other vegetables.

SCP: Which current Tory Burch handbag is your favorite, and why?

TB: It is impossible to choose a favorite, but our Romy Tote in caramel suede is up there. There’s always power in collaboration.

SCP: Travel always seems to be a key inspiration in your work, not only in design themes but also in travel-friendly clothes and accessories, such as the foldable Reva Travel Flat or jersey dresses that pack so beautifully. How do you address the importance of how women live and travel today, and how do you meet those needs?

TB: I am always thinking about how I can help women feel confident, beautiful and strong, whether they are traveling, going to work, heading to an event or tackling the myriad responsibilities and commitments they have in a day. If they can style one of our products for all those occasions, even better — from our jersey shirtdress to our new engineered wool trousers, which can be paired with a blazer and heels or a T-shirt and flats.

SCP: Finally, what is it about the South Coast Plaza audience that it seems to respond so well to your designs?

TB: Our customer at South Coast Plaza has an incredible eye and a deep understanding of design, craftsmanship and quality. They are resonating with our take on American sportswear: refined, a bit twisted, never too serious. What I love most is how our South Coast Plaza audience embraces color; they dress with a sense of optimism and warmth that feels quintessentially Californian.
