It is not every day that decades of designs prove to be so timeless that a designer chooses not only to bring them back, but remix and restore them as well. This is exactly what designer Stuart Vevers has done with the Coach Originals collection.

Now on view through March 15 in Jewel Court, the collection is the subject of an interactive pop-up exclusive to South Coast Plaza.  Come and discover how Coach has re-envisioned its signature handbags from the 20th century for 2020. Inspired by the Spring ’20 styles. the Coach Originals collection features three types of bags:  Remade, Remixed and Restored, all of which can be purchased at our Coach boutique.  Some are one-of-a-kind, others are limited edition, and styles vary depending on what’s available from the Coach archive.

Remade bags include the structured Willis top handle first introduced in the ’90s, the ’60s Rambler crossbody bag which now has a space designed for an iPad mini, and variations on the Turnlock bag. Inspired by the metal toggles that secured the roof of a sports car, the Coach turnlock closure was introduced in 1964. Six years later, the iconic leather hangtag debuted. Both design features have since become the most recognizable Coach bag signatures,

One of the most eye-catching Remade pieces is a shoulder bag featuring a 1969 portrait of Barbra Streisand created by the late Richard Bernstein, an artist famous for his Interview magazine covers. Streisand and Bernstein are among Vevers’ childhood idols.

Restored handbags consist of vintage Coach bags – such as the Bucket bag – that have been lovingly brought back to prime condition.

Remixed handbags are one-of-a-kind bags that have been reconstructed from vintage Coach bags. We’re a fan of The Triple Dinky, created from three Dinky bags layered and sewn together. It’s a nod to the Three-Frame Shoulder Clasp bag with a trio of kiss clasps, introduced in 1969.

The pop-up showcases all three handbag types  in interactive ways.  As part of Coach’s exciting personalization program, artists Lindsay Wright, Celia Jacob, Roselly Monegro and Superwaxx will be on-site painting live on Coach purchases. Hot stamping and limited-edition retro-inspired patches and pins are also available.  You also can learn how to refurbish some of Coach’s most beloved vintage silhouettes from Debi L. Hopper, a master leather restorer.

Take advantage of the Instagram-worthy pop-up and get a Polaroid taken while you’re there. Share your #theCoachOriginals and #SCPstyle moments on social media by tagging @coach and @southcoastplaza.
