From Instagram-hit Rainbow Cake to Dessert Plates

The rainbow nonpareil-covered vanilla layer cake that baking sensation Amirah Kassem prepared recently at our Williams Sonoma store looks fun and festive not only on the outside. It’s fun and festive to the core, thanks to a special surprise inside to delight cake lovers with an extra-sweet tooth.

Cut the cake, remove the first slice and suddenly, a miniature confetti avalanche of rainbow sprinkles, nonpareils and candy-covered chocolates instantly pour out from the center. That’s how Amirah’s Instagram-famous confection got its name – Rainbow Explosion Cake.

Growing up celebrating birthdays with the tradition of a colorful piñata in Juarez, Mexico, Amirah drew from her heritage to recreate the “explosion” of rainbow sweets as a center filling.

That cake became the star of Flour Shop, the bakery that she founded in New York.

The candy confetti-covered cake also is at the heart of Amirah’s recently-launched baking book, “The Power of Sprinkles” (Abrams).  Having shown Jimmy Fallon how to decorate a Rainbow Explosion Cake on “The Tonight Show” and created sweet treats for the likes of Katy Perry, Amirah is bringing her whimsical multi-hued confection how-to to those who want to bake at home.

She recently highlighted a special Flour Shop collection for Williams Sonoma during her book tour stop at South Coast Plaza earlier this month. If you missed that book signing, the collection and Amirah’s new book will be showcased in a June 27 baking technique class at our Williams Sonoma store.

The collection includes a cake kit, baking tools such as pans and colorful spatulas. . .

. . .and rainbow cake decor essentials, of course.

No rainbow cake-inspired collection is complete without dessert plates illustrated – emoji-style – with several of Amirah’s favorite iconography: a unicorn, a slice of rainbow layer cake, lips blowing a kiss with an oven mitt and a winking smiley face.

For those who love rainbow dinnerware and serving pieces to build around the droll dessert plates, the Flour Shop collection includes plates and bowls available as 16-piece set or in sets of four of the same item.

“The Power of Sprinkles” book, the Flour Shop collection and June 27 baking technique class are available at Williams Sonoma on level 1 in the Crate and Barrel/Macy’s Home Store Wing.
