The 1960s was a decade of unparalleled change. Fresh ways of thinking and aesthetic upheavals replaced the functional design of the fifties. “Everything is possible” became a design motto and it was really true.

Perhaps this is why we continue to glance back to the seminal sixties for inspiration and optimism. Jaeger-LeCoultre recently unveiled its new limited edition Polaris line—an update of the distinctive Polaris Memovox diving watch created in 1968—in honor of the timepiece’s 50th anniversary.

Available in stainless steel, titanium and pink gold, with black or deep blue watch faces, the new Polaris variations are simultaneously sporty and elegant—ideal for the modern man with an active lifestyle. The case mixes brushed and polished finishes for definition, and comfy straps come in topstitched leather, alligator, textured rubber or stainless steel.

The contemporary-with-a-hint-of-vintage timepiece channels the best of the Grande Maison’s watchmaking tradition and comes in three styles: Memovox, Automatic, and Chronograph. Some versions bare a stylized diving helmet, a nod to the original model that hid the same symbol inside its case, and a special 50th anniversary inscription.

Other Polaris styles have transparent case backs so horology fans can observe the watchmaker’s made-in-house mechanical movement or its dark oscillating weight, which further enhances the watch’s athletic look. The iconic timepiece features dual crowns, one to set the time, the other to operate the internal bezel, which doubles as a timer for dives or other events.

Much like other timeless designs, the legendary watch manages to represent the past, present and future all at once.
