RED CARPET STYLE STARS

BY LAURIE BROOKINS

In advance of the March 10th Academy Awards, a look at the 2024 awards season reveals South Coast Plaza’s designer labels are enjoying the spotlight.

Style pundits have referred to the Academy Awards as “Fashion’s Super Bowl” for at least two decades, but the phrase has never been more fitting, thanks to the high-wattage combination of couture-level labels and the chic stars who have embraced them on red carpets in recent years.

From Dua Lipa to Jessica Chastain, Bradley Cooper to Colman Domingo, Hollywood may have never been more stylish than right now. That’s a big statement, but red carpets undeniably have scaled up since the 1990s, turning even a movie premiere into an event worthy of a haute-couture moment. But make no mistake: no red carpet is bigger than the Oscars, this year taking place on Sunday, March 10th at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. Nominees Emma Stone, Ryan Gosling, Cillian Murphy and Emily Blunt are just a few of the stars expected to bring their fashion A-game to the carpet, wearing often custom looks from a variety of the most coveted labels in the world.

While the night is focused squarely on the film industry, with Oppenheimer and Poor Things among the movies expected to take home a trophy or two, viewers have proven the red carpet is also a priority. In fact, a 2019 study revealed that roughly one-third of the Oscar Night audience watched the broadcast primarily for the fashion. With that in mind, we’ve rounded up some of the most captivating looks seen on red carpets throughout the 2024 awards season to highlight Hollywood’s passion for embracing exceptional style in the spotlight — and each of these labels can be found among the boutiques at South Coast Plaza.

Jessica Chastain in Gucci

A celebrated actress and film producer, Oscar winner Jessica Chastain also has been a Gucci ambassador since 2022, when she appeared in the house’s campaign for its high-jewelry collection, christened Hortus Deliciarum that year. At January’s Emmy Awards, the George and Tammy nominee was unquestionably one of the night’s standout style stars in this custom Gucci design by creative director Sabato De Sarno, a bright green silk cady gown embroidered all over with sequins and accented with beaded fringe.

Bradley Cooper in Louis Vuitton

In 2022, the Maestro star and director was named a Louis Vuitton’s first watch ambassador as the house was in the midst of showcasing its reimagined Tambour timepiece collection (an unabashed watch fan, Cooper was an ideal choice). That’s key to the reason this year’s triple nominee — for best actor, best original screenplay and best motion picture of the year — has been wearing Louis Vuitton on a plethora of red carpets, though it’s notable that he also looks pretty terrific in the house’s exceptional attention to tailoring. At January’s Critics Choice Awards, Cooper looked splendid in a full Louis Vuitton look, which included a custom black wool three-piece suit with a white shirt, black tie and black shoes, paired with a steel Tambour watch with a navy dial.

At January’s Golden Globe Awards, Riley Keough — a nominee for her performance in Daisy Jones and the Six — looked beautifully ethereal in a look from Chanel’s Spring/Summer 2023 haute-couture collection, which consisted of an embroidered apron-style top in white silk tulle, worn over a bustier gown with a lace train. Keough’s head-to-toe look also included Chanel jewels that included pieces from the house’s popular Coco Crush collection, paired with a Chanel evening bag and shoes.

He’s among the reasons we now refer to fashion-forward actors as male peacocks, and indeed, few men in Hollywood do style better than Timothée Chalamet. At January’s Golden Globe Awards, he once again topped best-dressed lists in this look from Celine Homme by Hedi Slimane, which consisted of an embroidered jacket in black wool gabardine and cropped top in black viscose, paired with the label’s classic tux pants and its Drugstore Chelsea boot. Chalamet completed his look with jewels by Cartier, which also ranks high among his go-to brands.

Christina Ricci in Saint Laurent

The Yellowjackets star is beloved by designers for her style choices, which are consistently chic and elegant, with a splash of forward-thinking attitude. That includes this exquisite black velvet gown with a plunging neckline from Saint Laurent by Anthony Vaccarello, who indeed excels at sleek, artful designs that put an emphasis not only on a woman’s face and shoulders, but also a spectacular piece of statement jewelry. A bow in back, meanwhile, is a sweet, surprising detail. Ricci’s look was finished with Saint Laurent’s Kate clutch in brushed leather.

Isabelle Huppert in Balanciaga

A genuine icon of French cinema, Huppert is often lauded for her style, which is equal parts chic and fearless. She proved that once again in February, when the legendary actress wore this glistening emerald-hued Balenciaga gown — a perfect pairing with the 70-year-old actress’s signature auburn hair — to the 74th Berlin International Film Festival. Dubbed the Cover Dress for its sleek, covered-up look, Huppert’s gown was a custom piece by Demna, inspired by a design from his Summer 2024 collection and crafted of a silk knit fully embroidered with green sequins and worn with Balenciaga’s Pantabodysuit in jersey.

He’s been winning a bounty of awards for his work in Oppenheimer, but Cillian Murphy is also collecting praise for his forward-thinking approach to style, wearing brands that include Saint Laurent, Celine and Omega. At February’s BAFTA Film Awards, the British version of the Academy Awards, Murphy chose a head-to-toe look by Zegna, which consisted of the Italian label’s made-to-measure wool and silk coat and wool mohair tuxedo jacket, the latter featuring the design’s iconic broken lapels, worn with a silk collarless shirt, wool mohair evening trousers, micro-pattern silk cummerbund, and black leather boots. Murphy added Omega’s De Ville Prestige watch to complete the look.

If any actor has enjoyed accolades for his style during the 2024 awards season, it’s undoubtedly been Colman Domingo, a best-actor nominee this year for his starring role in Rustin. Working with celebrity stylists Wayman + Micah, Domingo has proven himself to be a fearless red-carpet star, and that was undeniably true at the Critics Choice Awards, where he wore a terrific Valentino look from Pierpaolo Piccioli’s Fall/Winter 2023/24 Un Chateau haute-couture collection. The combination of the mustard-toned suit and pale blue shirt might alone have landed the actor on best-dressed lists, but the textural coat on his shoulders sealed it. Domingo also proved his mettle with his accessories, which consisted of Bulgari jewels and Christian Louboutin’s gold calf leather boots.

Dua Lipa in Prada

Her song for the megahit Barbie, “Dance the Night,” is likewise its own phenomenal success, but long before the 2023 film, Dua Lipa already had become a style star, wearing high-wattage labels that include Gucci, Bottega Veneta and Tiffany & Co. At the Critics Choice Awards, Lipa wore a head-to-toe look by Prada, which consisted of a strapless column dress in cherry red cloquet, a type of jacquard that’s highly textural and in this design featured a three-dimensional effect. Lipa’s accessories were likewise by the Italian house: a silver brushed leather clutch and silver brushed leather sandals.

Margo Robbie in Giorgio Armani Privé

The star and producer of Barbie, which scored eight Oscar nominations this year, Margot Robbie has fully leaned in to the iconic doll’s signature color throughout the 2024 awards season, with custom looks from Balmain, Chanel, Celine and others. At the BAFTAs, nominee Robbie wore a custom gown from Giorgio Armani Privé, the legendary designer’s designation for his haute-couture collection. A blend of pink silk and black velvet, the gown featured a sweetheart neckline and black paillette embroidery and was paired with Armani’s black opera gloves.

Domenico Dolce and Stephano Gabbana excel at dressing Hollywood’s A-list, as even a cursory look at the 2024 awards season will attest. For the Critics Choice Awards, the dynamic design duo created a fantastic gown for Oprah Winfrey. Not unlike Robbie, Winfrey has embraced a signature color throughout this awards season as an homage to The Color Purple, the 2023 film for which she serves as producer (and is an update of the 1985 movie by the same name, which netted Winfrey an Oscar nomination as best supporting actress). At the Critics Choice Awards, Winfrey looked chic and gorgeous in a custom Dolce&Gabbana gown crafted of technical jersey, a design that beautifully accented her shoulders. She accessorized the look with a crystal box clutch also by the famed Italian label.

Also at the Critics Choice Awards, Rachel Brosnahan looked stunning in Givenchy as she continued to celebrate the accolades that accompanied the final season of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. Brosnahan’s plunging Long Voyou dress was crafted of black silk crepe and embellished with crystal polka dots and is from the house’s Pre-Fall 2024 collection.
