South Coast Plaza Ushers in the Year of the Horse

Costa Mesa, CA (January 2014) – South Coast Plaza celebrates the Year of the Horse with a three-week celebration. Beginning on January 23rd, a private opening ceremony hosted by South Coast Plaza, in cooperation with Consulate General of the People’s Republic of China includes a community welcome, ribbon cutting and traditional Chinese performances. Ambassador Liu Jian, Consul-General of China in Los Angeles and notable officials will be in attendance.

For the first time, over 45 Chinese performers and artisans from Zhejiang Province will entertain with traditional song and dance and folk art craftsmanship. The Zhejiang Province of China is noted for its rich historic culture, rolling hills, a place where talented artisans and performers have gathered for centuries. A 40 piece photography exhibit, “Beautiful Zhejiang,” will be on display throughout the New Year Celebration. The exhibit is a modern look into the rich culture and history of a coastal area of China. Zhejiang Province has always been in the forefront of education, science and technology, and culture and art also a key influence in Chinese literature, theatre, painting, calligraphy, and arts and crafts.

The Chinese Zodiac horse symbolizes personal drive, passion and appetite for freedom. Among all the spirit animals, it is one that shows a strong motivation that carries one through life. South Coast Plaza has commissioned an award-winning design firm known for its’ Rose Parade floats to construct a 15-foot horse feature. The gold filigree horse exhibit has a rich profusion of potted plants and beautiful floral arrangements. The exhibit is surrounded by eight blossoming orange trees, which are a symbol of good fortune and abundant happiness.
