MIKIMOTO DEBUTS A SPECIAL INSTALLATION IN CELEBRATION OF THE PEARL NECKLACE

THE MÖBIUS RIBBON HIGHLIGHTS THE ILLUSTRIOUS HISTORY OF THE PEARL

Commemorating the release of Assouline’s The Pearl Necklace, Mikimoto will debut a special installation titled the Mikimoto Möbius Ribbon that captures the timeless allure of the finest cultured pearls and pearl jewelry in the world.

Created in partnership with architectural firm Studio Christian Wassmann, the project was inspired by 19th century mathematician August Ferdinand Möbius and the properties of his Möbius Strip. The single plane, with only one edge and no beginning or end, perfectly echoes the pearl’s elegantly simple yet complex form.

Iconic imagery from Mikimoto’s illustrious history, curated by Assouline, is prominently featured throughout the installation, which covers an area of 72 square meters. Photographs of founder Kokichi Mikimoto and his innovations in cultured pearls are mixed with vintage campaigns, catalogues and other historical ephemera. Moving in to the interior and through a gentle arc spanning overhead, visitors explore the story of nature’s most precious gem through a narrative of striking archival imagery.

The result is a journey through the cultural history and nuance of the pearl, celebrating Mikimoto’s exceptional artistry and designs that have carried on for over 120 years.
The Ribbon makes its debut at South Coast Plaza in Costa Mesa, CA and will be up from October 10th to the 20th before moving on to The Shops at Crystals in Las Vegas, NV for the month of November. It will continue on to other destinations in the United States.

Assouline will release The Pearl Necklace, which explores the legacy of the pearl, this fall.
