Julian Bedel

founder of Fueguia 1833

Bedel discusses the origins of South America’s first luxury fragrance house, the philosophy behind each handcrafted batch and his recent collaboration with Oscar-winning composer Gustavo Santaolalla.

Together they created Ronroco, a fragrance named after the Andean instrument and born from the parallel languages of music and scent.

Each batch is unique. What does it mean to create something that can never be exactly replicated?

People wanting for consistency can look for any other perfume brands, that they are beautiful for sure. I prefer to embrace nature in the good and the bad and see how people react to those fluctuations.

How does it feel to translate music into scent while collaborating with Oscar-winning composer Gustavo Santaoalla on the fragrance Ronroco?

I’m a believe that the object carries the mojo, playing the piano, the ronroco, a guitar, a violin, you name it. It’s something that you subconsciously connect. I think that because the fact that i used to build guitars and i still build guitars and i love playing guitars and i love the music, it’s been kind of natural for me too decide on these ingredients or why this and Gustavo juts say “Yes” and he said “this is it!”

What does it mean to bring South America to South Coast Plaza?

Here in Southern California I see a lot of South American vibes in how they relate with life, no? Enjoying a lot of the community and nature, more constant in a way.

Thank you for watching and looking forward to returning to South Coast Plaza
