Vacheron Constantin

For seven days in Geneva, Switzerland, the latest in status timepieces made their global debut at the recent Watches and Wonders summit, which brought together an exceptional roster of iconic brands steeped in heritage, intricate craftsmanship and simply stunning design.

Watch aficionados converged for the first look at high-wattage 2022 releases from an incredible array of the world’s most sought-after timepiece brands, including those with boutiques at South Coast Plaza, such as Audemars Piguet, Vacheron Constantin, Rolex, Jaeger-LeCoultre, and many more. With something for every taste, occasion and collector level — a Cartier Tank watch to wear every day, a Panerai Submersible for dive adventures, a Montblanc GMT for travel, or a Chopard watch embellished with diamonds for the red carpet — the watch world has new styles to add to their timekeeping wardrobe.

Here, our edit of highlights from our brands that participated in Watches and Wonders, and styles that made their debut outside of Geneva, for fans of horological workmanship and spectacular design.

Audemars Piguet

Audemars Piguet

Audemars Piguet is celebrating the 50th anniversary of its iconic Royal Oak throughout 2022, and with that in mind, released a collection that honors and updates the codes of this status watch. Crafted in steel, this 37mm self-winding Royal Oak features a light blue dial guillochéd in the brand’s signature “Grand Tapisserie” pattern and a diamond-embellished bezel.

A. Lange & Söhne

An off-center dial is the signature of the elegant Grand Lange 1. The new style is slightly thinner, just 8.2 millimeters, for a better fit on the wrist, while its smoky gray dial is housed in a 41mm case in 18-karat white (seen here) or pink gold.

The legendary Italian house is celebrating the 10th anniversary of its game-changing Octo collection, which combines ultra-thin styling with sleek, modernist details. Limited to just 200 pieces, Bulgari’s Octo Finissimo Chronograph GMT Anniversary Edition measures just 3.30 millimeters thick and features both a 42mm case and bracelet in matte-gray sandblasted titanium. The dial, meanwhile, is inspired by the original sketches of Bulgari watch master Fabrizio Buonamassa Stigliani.

The ultra-classic Cartier Tank has been a favorite among watch and fashion fans alike since its debut in 1917. For 2022, the Tank Louis Cartier is enjoying a chic update. The graphic red lacquered dial is housed in a yellow-gold case highlighted by a sapphire cabochon for the crown, positioned on a strap in tonal leather.

Chanel Fine Jewelry

Chanel’s incredibly popular J12 has been imbued with roughly 8.40 carats of rubies on the dial, bezel and sapphire crystal bracelet of the 38mm J12 X-Ray Red Edition, limited to just 12 pieces. The manual-winding in-house movement can be partially viewed through the sapphire crystal dial.

Dancing diamonds are the signature of Chopard’s Happy Sport collection. The latest version features a quintet of diamonds that spin freely on the dial of the 33mm Happy Sport. Made from ethically sourced 18-karat rose gold, highlighted by a diamond-set bezel.

In a villa in Geneva, Gucci celebrated high-watchmaking with a selection of new pieces, including this whimsical G-Timeless Dancing Bees watch, which features 12 bees that move around a dial crafted of green opal, all on a diamond-embellished bracelet.

Fans of one of the house’s most coveted handbags will quickly gravitate to this Hermès Kelly watch. The dial is housed in a case that resembles the bag’s beloved padlock, which dangles freely on a rose-gold bracelet accented with diamonds, or can be worn on a black calf cord to become a sautoir necklace.

Just in time for the release of Top Gun: Maverick, IWC has released the latest in its Top Gun pilot collection. The Big Pilot’s Watch Top Gun Edition “Mojave Desert” is inspired by the flight suits and desert setting of the famed Top Gun school at California’s China Lake. The 46mm automatic self-winding watch features a ceramic case and dark brown dial with luminescent numerals and hands.

From Jaeger-LeCoultre’s Métiers Rares atelier comes the Master Grande Tradition Calibre 948, an artful world timer that employs a tourbillon to take part in the 24-hour cycle. Against the backdrop of a beautifully enameled dial, the tourbillon rotates in 60 seconds and makes a complete circuit of the dial in 24 hours, while the 24 time zones are arranged in a ring around the central dial, all housed in a 43mm case of 18-karat white gold.

Ideal for travel, Montblanc’s 1858 GMT Automatic Date offers both the local time and the wearer’s home time effortlessly, thanks to an easy-to-read dual time indicator on the vivid blue sunray dial, housed in a 42mm steel case.

Water-resistant up to 300 meters, the Panerai Submersible QuarantaQuattro expands the brand’s offerings in dive watches with a variety of choices in dials and rubber straps. The black dial features luminous hour markers and hands, housed in a 44mm case with rotating bezel.

Elegant curve and shine are key to the latest from Piaget’s Limelight Gala collection, which includes this 32mm piece in 18-karat white gold. The aventurine dial is surrounded by 62 diamonds on two swirling, elongated lugs, with a Milanese bracelet in white gold.

Among the most talked-about debuts at Watches and Wonders was this Day-Date 40 in platinum, enhanced by a dial in ice blue. This substantial watch features a fluted bezel on the 40mm case and a date window at the 3 o’clock position, with Rolex’s signature Cyclops lens on the sapphire crystal to magnify the date.

TAG Heuer

TAG Heuer’s popular Aquaracer Professional 300 collection enjoys a new addition that features a vivid orange dial for fans of sporty-meets-status dive watches. The 43mm watch features black hour and minute hands and indexes, all applied with white Super-Luminova, housed in a steel case with black ceramic unidirectional bezel.

Vacheron Constantin

A case of 18-karat 5N pink gold surrounds the openwork blue dial on Vacheron Constantin’s Overseas Perpetual Calendar Ultra-Thin Skeleton. The 41.5mm case is just 8.1mm thick, while the skeleton dial displays a moon-phase indicator and perpetual calendar in addition to hours and minutes. In addition to the pink-gold bracelet, a blue calf strap accented with white stitching and a strap in blue rubber are provided for versatility.

Van Cleef & Arpels

From the “Poetry of Time” collection, the Lady Arpels Ballerine Enchantée watch features a 40mm case in rose gold. The enameled rose-gold dial showcases a graceful, fairy-like dancer, whose wings and tutu move with the time, all on a diamond-embellished rose-gold bracelet.

NEW FOR 2022

More new fine timepiece from South Coast Plaza’s luxury brands:

From Omega’s elegant De Ville collection, this 40mm Co-Axial Master Chronometer is crafted from the watchmaker’s proprietary Sedna gold, an alloy that blends gold, copper and palladium. The domed grey dial is crafted with the grand feu enamel technique, with hands and indexes also in Sedna gold, all on a matching gray strap.

The delicate and intricate details of Buccellati’s jewelry are reflected in the Tulle watch, with the house’s signature honeycomb design in yellow gold. A diamond pavé dial is surrounded by white-gold bezels and accented with additional diamonds.

Tiffany & Co.

From the Tiffany 1837 collection, this Makers 16mm Square Watch in stainless steel honors the codes of the legendary jewelry house, from the turquoise dial that evokes thoughts of the jeweler’s signature Tiffany Blue to the round brilliant diamonds that surround the dial and its diamond indexes.

Libellule is French for “dragonfly,” the inspiration for the Dior Grand Soir Libellule, a 36mm timepiece crafted in 18-karat white gold with the dial and bezel set with brilliant-cut diamonds. The yellow gold dragonfly is set with emeralds, sapphires and amethysts and adorned with mother of pearl and feathers, with an off-center dial at the 12 o’clock position.

Harry Winston

A palette of brilliant colors has been added to Harry Winston’s Emerald timepiece collection, including this turquoise mother-of-pearl dial highlighted by brilliant-cut diamonds on both the dial and the bezel of the 18-karat white gold case, all on a turquoise satin wrap-style bracelet.

David Yurman

The famed jewelry designer’s signature cable detailing is showcased on the side of the stainless-steel case on the 38mm Classic watch, which features a mother-of-pearl dial and a diamond-accented bezel, all on a steel bracelet.

Louis Vuitton

As its name implies, the Tambour Outdoor Chronograph by Louis Vuitton has been designed for myriad adventures. Functions on the sandblasted blue matte dial of this 44mm timepiece include a GMT, small seconds and a tachymeter in the polished-steel case.

Porsche Design

Aficionados of fine automobiles now can design a high-end watch that matches their sportscar with Porsche Design’s Custom-Built Timepieces program. Up to six million combinations are possible, allowing the wearer to select desired colors for the titanium case, dial and ring insert, bezel, strap and other details on this sporty chronograph.
