Gucci x Disney celebrates the Year of the Rat with a Mouse
Hold on to your teacups. Gucci has launched its collaboration with the global juggernaut, Disney, for the Year of the Rat. Walt Disney’s original Mickey Mouse is the star of the new Gucci x Disney capsule collection featuring more than 70 items available at our Gucci boutique, ahead of Lunar New Year, January 25.
The collection at South Coast Plaza includes bags, accessories, timepieces, luggage and ready-to-wear designed by Alessandro Michele, the Italian fashion house’s creative director.
Naturally, Alessandro and the Gucci team traveled to our Southern California neighbor, Disneyland Park in Anaheim – the original house of the mouse (a mere 2o-minute car ride from our boutique) – to style a campaign featuring actor Earl Cave, stylist Zoe Bleu and actress Ni Ni.
They didn’t stop there. Alessandro and Gucci took it a step further by displaying in our Gucci boutique’s window their reinterpretation of a teacup and saucer from the Mad Tea Party ride at Disneyland Resort. In the Gucci boutique window version, two mannequins dressed in Gucci x Disney outfits sit in a giant blue metallic teacup and saucer with an oversize disco ball hovering above them. Look closely into the window and you’ll see one of the more exquisite items from the collection – a silk shirt featuring 3/4 sleeves and a print depicting Mickey sitting on vines, with a flock of bright-hued birds. A matching pajama pant is also available.
In the more casual realm, Alessandro Guccified Mickey Mouse, incorporating him into the classic GG logo and signature green and red stripe for T-shirts, hoodies and sweatshirts.
He also looked to the past for inspiration for the collection’s main print: a beige and ebony Mini GG Supreme canvas with Mickey Mouse, available in varying sizes. The print, reproduced with digital printing, is an ode to a house fabric from the ‘80s. Pieces that feature the canvas include the dressy yet uber-casual Disney x Gucci GG women’s Princetown slippers and the jet-ready duffle, among many others.
